OANNEVmKE DOINGS. A meeting of the shareholders of the Iviritaki dairy factory will be he ld in the Xiritaki school on Tuesday at 7.30 p.m. Maharahara is to have a new storekeeper. Air McLean having sold out. He is leaving there shortly. Maharahara cheese factory has closed Tor the season. Mr and Mrs E. 11. Macdonald and family have left Maharahara for their new home at Levin. A social was held at Maharahara, Miss Webb was musician, and Mr H. Webb M.C. The schoolroom was crowded. Maharahara west school has closed, no children in district; but at Alatahiwi (near the railway), the accommodation is to be increased as a number of new families have lately come there. A legal opinion states that the re-cently-elected chairman of the Woodvilla School Committee is ineligible as a member of the committee, and an election must be held for a now committee. Mr Leslie Anderson, returned soldier, son of the Mayor, proceeded to Auckland on Saturday to meet his fiancee, who is arriving from Scotland. Miss McClure has been appointed assistant at Matahiwi school; Miss Ross, domestic science instructress at Dannevirke; Miss Robertson, assistant at South school; Air Mudgway, sole teacher at Kumeroa. Miss Lowman, assistant at South school, has resigned. Watea (Takapan) soldiers settlers desire the Hawke’s Bay Land Board to increase the size of their holdings. Mr A. E. Webber has during the past few days sold one of his business premises in High Street. .Dannevirke Motor Company have sold their business to C. L. Neilsen and Co. The garage is a particularly fine one. Mr H. Burden, retiring manager of the first-named firm, intends commencing business on bis own account. A block of shops opposite Andrews’ Hotel has been disposed of this week at a big price. In the latter block there are four tenants. In the local Court, R. C. Allen sued L. 1.. Malmanche for £8 2/, for wages and money lent. The case was adjourned after some evidence had been taken. Dannevirke - Herbertville Coaching Co. v. A. Duncan, claim £2 8/, judgment for amount claimed, with costs IS/.

North school is to bo re-modelled. A plan has been prepared, and Departmental and Board members, and officials have inspected the school. A manager is wanted for the butter factory at Matahiwi (Maharahara). A single man is desired, and a good salary is offered.

Te Papakuku school held a fancy dress dance. Prizes for best costumes were won by Lizzie McDonald, Mavis Barclay, George Gray, Jack Chote.„ Music was supplied by Messrs B. Chote, Sargent. Miss Chote, and Mr H. Chote was M.C. Air A. M. Yarrall. a former chairman of the Tamaki (Te Rehunga) Cheese Company, who is now farming near Te Aroha, is at present on a visit to Dannevirke.

ATr A. B. Mollgaard has sold his store and residence to Mr £ox, who was in business at Terrace End.

PAHIATUA PARS. Charles Leahy stole an overcoat belonging to H. Shaw, who left it hanging up in an hotel. Accused pleaded he was drunk at the time. He was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment. About twenty shareholders attended a meeting, and a suggestion that the factory should close dovCffi was not supported. , It was shown that there were 535 cows in the district, and it was unanimously resolved to carry on. It was stated that if the factory closed down the high prices which many of them had paid for their farms would never be seen again. Mr E. H. Brown, exchairman of the company, said that last year was a very adverse year. There, were so many people selling out and leaving the cows in a bad condition to the incoming farmer. Alost of the cows last spring had come in poor, and were a disgrace to the farmers. There has been land aggregation, and sheep had taken the place of cows*. ■ •

Retirrned soldiers at Makomako organised a concert and dance. Mr J. Rising presided, and Mr Hugh Mackay returned thanks to the promoters. The clever Ebbett family and several other vocalists and instrumentalists took part. Almost the whole settlementattended the entertainment. - The condition of the big traffic bridge between the town and the railway is again considered to be very unsafe. Recent floods have given it another shaking up. Some day it will float down to Foxton. The taxi fares to the railway station have been increased 50 per cent., and 100 per cent, for early morning calls. The municipal electrical scheme is expanding so rapidly that it has been decided to order an additional gas producer plant.

A poll of ratepayers in the borough is to be taken on a proposal to strike a special rate for the raising of £l5O annually for the upkeep of the carnival park.

Mr H. E. Griggs’ property of 400 acres, at Hukanui, has been purchased by Mr J. Moore of Carterton, and Mr H. R. Wilton’s farm of 300 acres at Ballance, has been secured by Mr H. Knowles, of Dannevirke. Mr J. M. Goggin, returned soldier, has resigned the position of county ranger.

The county solicitors have informed the Council that the latter cannot borrow money for the purchase of roadrnaking machinery. A reinforced concrete bridge is to be erected over Tylee’s ford at Makuri, and a new bridge is to be built over the stream near Makuri township. When the town traffic bridge was partially dismantled a few years ago the County Council purchased one or two of the spans and vised them in the erection of a bridge at Kaitawa. The Department now refuses to make any payment, as the bridge was constructed out of second-had material, contrary to the wishes of the Minister of Public Works. It has been resolved to interview the Minister. The Public Works Department some time ago voted £336 for metalling Dew’s road, and it is of the opinion that tbe Council should carry out the metalling.

The borough overdraft limit has been fixed a.t £24 50.
