High School (15) 3 v. Western United 12. Jackeytown 0 v. Feilding 3. PIRATES (black) v. DIGGERS (white).

Pirates immediately took play to the Whites’ ground and penned them on their last line. Uatta by a clever interception raised the siege for the Whites and was responsible for operations going to the Blacks’ quarterVnark. The Black pack kept the invaders out, and play gradually shifted to midfield, where Ferguson put in a great run and got over, but an infringement spoilt the score. The Whites then took a hand at attack , and kept the Blacks hard pressed, the • situation being eventually eased by * the Blacks securing a force. A free- * kick to the Diggers in a handy posi- j tion, Hodder had a shot, but missed ■ the uprights. The Whites maintained the pressure and the Blacks were again forced down. A good return by Stockwell sent play to the Whites’ territory, but the defenders managed by means of short loose rushes (o -r equalise play. From this area Swain- ' son found the line in the Blacks’ .- twenty-five, and play hovered round ' the Blacks’ last line for a considerable • time, Seeker raising the siege with a * good kid:. Swainson and Hodder set * the Whites on the aggressive, and a \ freekick on the Blacks’ twenty-five gave Swainson a shot, which he turned to account with a good kick.— . Pirates 0; Diggers 3. The Whites were now having the best of the play and , kept the Blacks hard on defence. An- , other freekick was awarded the in- '■ vaders, Swainson being entrusted with the kick and duly registered a goal.— . Pirates 0; Diggers 6. Until the call j of half time the Blacks kept up strong ; aggressive movements but the defence j of the Whites was sound and tire invaders were unable to register a score. On resuming - the Blacks strove hard to penetrate their opponents’ defence, but their efforts were not rewarded. Eglinton, Ferguson and Stockwell set the Blacks on various attacks but the Diggers were well entrenched and gradually shifted play to neutral ground. A long spell of up and down play followed. From a melee ainidfield Ferguson gathered up the leather and showing a good burst of speed grounded the ball in the coveted area. The kick at goal was not successful. —Pirates 3; Diggers (J. A spell of fast play followed, the Blacks setting up attack after attack, but the Diggers’ defence was solid. Ferguson attempted another score but he was promptly accounted for. A freekick to the Blacks gave Dillon a chance to goal but he was not successful. The Whites now took a turn at attack but were not successful, Eglinton turning the tables and shifting the venue or play to the Whites’ area. Glendinning increased the pressure on the Whites by finding the line well inside the defenders’ twenty-five. Offside play spoilt the opportunity and the Whites shortly after forced down. Play was inside the Whites’ quarter-mark as time was called. Mr J. B. Proud controlled the game.

KIA TO A 0 v. AVI.STERN UNITED 0. When Kia Toa met Western United in the first round the former came out on top, but Saturday’s match found these teams more evenly matched for when no-side was sounded neither team had scored. Western United (red) opened up with the elements in their favour and kept Kia Toa •( blapk), hard on the defensive for the greater part of the first spell. Only once in this spell did the light Kia Teas come near to scoring but their rush on this occasion was nullified by an infringement, Reds subsequently resorting to a force down. Reds maintained a

steady pressure, their forwards being' superior in weight to their opponent?-, they coming well nigh scoring on many occasions. Cockroft and Anstis showed out prominently. " The creditable efforts of the Red backs also failed to break through the jealously defended Kia Toa last line. When half time was called the Blacks tvere opening' an offensive and this they continued on resumption of play but very quickly were compelled to force. It was not long before Westerns were solidly on the defensive and efforts to clear were immediately frustrated. Splendid combination was also shown by the Black backs but their endeavours to break through were fruitless. When time wars called Kia Toa was still applying the pressure. The, game ended in a draw —no score either side. During the progress of the second spell “Kiwi” Perrin, who did good work for Western, sustained a nasty cut in the forehead and was compelled to retire. Mr O. Banner controlled the game.
