NOTES. “Sir Lancelot,” of the “Evening Post,” has been informed that Arnyt has has been sold for 8000 guineas to an Indian buyer. The Otago rider G. Feilding, who rode Lochella in the Great Northern double, bad the mount on Slowcoach in the Winter Steeplechase on the concluding day at Ellerslie. Slowcoach, who raced consistently throughout the meeting, is one of the New South Wales purchases ot the Hun. E. W. Alison. He raced unsuccessfully last season, and scored his first, win on Wednesday. He is by Wankenphast, whose progeny have won a good many races in Australia this season, from Aquiline, an imported mare by St. Savin (St. Simon Aboyne), imported to New South Wales from America in Si. Savin was purchased by Mr L. G. Bln me, one of bis first mates being Lady Medallist. Slowcoach, who is a lirst foal, won 1150 sovs in stakes .at the meeting. Mr W. G. Shorratt acted as judge at (lie Gisborne Racing Club’s meeting last week, owing to Mr R. B- ' jUß '' being unal>le to attend. According to “The Squire” (“Daily Telegraph ) two other officials nearly missed the meeting. He writes; —Handicapper H. Coyle and starter R. H. Skipwith, ar-

rived in Napier on Tuesday night with the intention 01 proceeding' to Gisborne to carry out their duties at the winter fixture of the Gisborne Racing’ Club, but they found out on arrival here that the expected means of transit by steamer was not available, and, as the roads to Gisborne were in such a bad state, no guarantee could be given that a taxi would get them through in time for the meeting, and it looked as if the brace of important officials were going to be held up. However, a cargo steamer had the luck to get under way for Gisborne last night, and though the sports did not travel in the usual way by buying their tickets at tire office of the shipping company, they got on board the lugger all right, and when the roundup. of stowaways was made at Gisborne this morning it was an odds-on. chance that amongst them were several who had not adopted that means of getting along the trail previously. The winter is now here in real earnest and you will want a rain coat to keep the wet out and a warm one to keep the cold out, whilst attending the winter meeting. Alf. Mahon, the sporting mercer, The Square, has just the thing you want. Call on him today and make a purchase.*
