PAHIATUA IdCENSING COM/MITTEE. The annual meeting of the Pahiatua Licensing Committee was held at Woodville on Thursday; present—Mr S. L. P. Free, S.M. (chairman), and Messrs J. B. Westlake, Geo. Goldfinch, J. H. Fair hurst, A. Ross, and Wm. Snell. With regard to the Post Office Hotel, Woodville, the police report on the structure was adverse, stating that the premises were in the same condition'as at last annual meeting, when the license was renewed conditionally on a new building being erected by June, 1920.

Inspector McKinnon represented the Department, Mr Noble (Masterton) appeared for the owners, Dwan Bros., and Mr Patterson (Dannevhdce), for the licensee, C. W. Grenside. Constable Skinner deposed to the general conditions of the premises and alleged several unsatisfactory features. New wallpaper had been put over old paper, and the floor of the kitchen was on the same level as the backyard. He considered it an old ramshackle, and it was poorly furnished. He mentioned certain defects, sanitary nnd otherwise. The tariff was 10/ a day, and he did not think.the hotel came up to the required standard.

Health Inspector Wallwork, who had inspected the building in company with Mr Middleton, senior inspector, gave a very condemnatory report of the building. There had been very little improvement done since he made his report. He was outspoken concerning- the lack of sanitary conveniences, and the general appearance of the hotel, declaring a man could go through the floor. Senior Inspector Middleton. who examined the place on May 10th, deposed to abundant evidence of the activitv of the borer. He commented on the state of the sanitary conveniences, and the fire escapes. The hotel was infested with the borer.

Dr. Dawson, of Pahiatua. said the hotel was in about the same condition as when he had examined it two years ago. The hotel, he admitted, was not of the best, but the tariff was lower than other hotels. He considered various alterations were needed to the building. He thought it a very hard thing on an owner at the present time to have to build a new hotel. He made various suggestions for improving the premises, but agreed that the health inspector's was correct. Arthur Bland, painter, enumerated several repairs and renovations he was carrving- out at the hotel. He considered it in a sanitary condition. Mr Noble pointed out the difficulty of re-building the hotel at the present time, and the restrictions imposed by the war regulations. The committee decided to adjourn the application for a license for three months. It held that the building' was not in a good state of repair, and ordered that several repairs and renovations should be carried out, The committee recognised the difficulty of rebuilding at the present time, but considered the repairs were very necessary.
