THE ROAD HOG.
CAN A BRAKE BE PUT ON SPEED MANIAC? At yesterday's meeting of the Oroua County Council, Cr. McElroy drew attention of members to recent tragedies due to high speed by motorists on our highways. He moved that two members of the Council be associated with its engineer to secure by-laws, etc., from other local bodies with a view to getting such a regulation as will tend to reduce the dangers within the Oroua county. In order to make by-laws effective it was essential to get the aid of the police. The speaker would like to see the police-trap system of England—by which times were taken at each end of a highway —adopted out here. There should bo some system of licensing drivers, and on conviction and two endorsements a speed maniac shoulf be prohibited from ever again driving a car. Cr. Vincent liked the American system best, under which a convicted speed maniac was not only deprived of his license to drive, but he was not even allowed to ride in a motor-car. But as a matter of fact, the only effective way was to cut down the speed of the engines. It seemed that the wider the road the greater the danger—that conduced to speed, danger. Cr. Morrison did not think by-laws would help much. The trouble with some of the road hogs was that "they would not take enough water with it." The motion was adopted, the members of the committee being Crs. Pearce. Mclennan and McElroy, with the engineer.— "Advocate."
