OBITUARY.
MR W. G. O. SMITH. After ailing for some time past as the result of sunstroke contracted on active service with the N.Z.E.F. in Egypt* Mr William George Charles Smith died at his residence, Palmerston North, on Wednesday night. The deceased was a popular and wellknown flaxmiller of this district and had held the rank of captain in the Mounted Rifles at Home and in the field. He was aged 46, and. the eldest son of Mr and Mrs C. L. Smith, of Frasertown, Wairoa. Hawke's Bay. Thirty years ago he took up flaxmilling in this district and joined Mr Walter Seifert in conducting a mill at Lockwood, Oroua River, a. venture in which Mr Smith remained interested until his death. As a volunteer Mr Smith was always a keen. and. energetic worker, and had beer, a member of the Mauawatu Mounted Rifles since the inception of the corps. In 1314, at the outbreak of war, he volunteered for service abroad, and rose from lieutenant to captain, being invalided home after three and a-half years ot. devoted service. In addition to his widow deceased leaves two brothers (Messrs A. H. Smith, Hamilton, and J. R. Smith, Palmerston North) and three sisters (Mrs Wright, Taranaki, and two unmarried sisters in Hawke's Bay. Deceased will have a military funeral, which will leave his residence, 41 Church Street, at 1.30 p.m. to-day.
