PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS.
i Yesterday was the fourteenth anni--1 versary of the death of the late Right J Hon. R. J. Seddon. The Mayor (Mr J. A. Nash, M.P.) is at present confined to his house with rather a severe cold. Miss Frances Rogerson has been appointed masseuse to the public hospital, in place of Mrs Evatt, resigned. Mr J. W. Poynton, Stipendiary Magistrate, has been appointed chairman of all Appeal Boards get up during the year 1920, in connection with the grading of teachers. Cr. Hugh Barrell submitted his resignation as chairman of the Oroua Countv Council, on the ground of illhealth. It was unanimously agreed to ask him to reconsider the matter. The medical men and staff of the local public hospital have had a portrait of the matron painted. This they presented to her to mark the occasion of her having completed 21 years of service in the hospital. The position of Governor-General of Australia has not been offered to General Birdwood. Admiral Jellicoe had the choice of New Zealand or Australia, and selected the former, stating "Australia requires a man richer than me." A pleasant gathering took place last evening, when the friends of Mr J. Staley, accountant of the Bank of Australasia, entertained him, and as a mark of esteem on the occasion of his approaching marriage, presented him with a silver tea set, appropriately inscribed. Our ladies* footwear department fully realise and are thoroughly conversant with the needs and desires of the ladies of this territory in footwear matters.
