ROSY. Madlaine Traverse will make an appeal for new followers when her latest plav, “Rose of the West,” is shown on the screen. This play, a melodramatic tale of the far north, is to be shown at the Kosy this week-end. It deals with a brutal French Canadian husband who tries to sell his daughter •is the price of a rich gold vein. The battle of the distraught mother against her husband offers a theme that is novel and compelling in its appeal to the sympathies of an audience. \nother picture to be shown is, “Be a kittle Sport,” a matrimonial mixup in which a girl can’t tell whether she’s a bride or merely married. Albert Kay and Elinor Fair are the couple responsible for most of the tun- A new serial. “The Man of Might, which features the popular serial hero, Wm. Duncan, will be launched to-rlav. Judging by reports every theatre showing this serial is doing- good tmsiness consistently. PALACE. “THE CRY OF THE WEAK” (Fannie Ward). The story. —The weak criminal classes cry out to the strong members of society, beseeching their mercy, their pitv, their help. If society denies the criminal the divine attribute of mercy, crying aloud “Once a crook, alwavs a crook —get you back to gaol f” then the erring must perforce continue their criminal activities. Such is the manner in which Judge Creighton argues with his friend and neighbour, District Attorney Dexter, over their favourite chessboard. But Dexter holds the pronounced view that no criminal ever really repents, that these are a class apart, that they must be herded together in crime pens. Judge therefore of this district attorney’s amazement when he finds his wife sheltering and hiding a thug, who had been detected in the act of assisting in a murderous assault upon Judge Creighton. Imagine his horror when he learns that the girl he married had been dragged up in a criminal environment, and that this boy she is shielding is her “kid brother!” Swept broadcast on the winds are Dexter’s theories. Stern circumstance compels him to look Avith more leniency upon his fellow-beings who transgress the laws of constituted society, and he is glad to do this Avhen he finds that Budd has actually reformed and is leading a man’s life out on the North Dakota ranch to Avhich he had been sent by Dexter on his release from prison. A two-reel comedy. a Topical and scenic Avill also be shown. EVERYBODY’S. w <3 ENID BENNETT IN “LAW OF MEN.” Laura Dayne, an orphan, succeeds in establishing herself as a sculptress in the Washington Square district of Ncav York by a dint of hard work. On the death of Laura’s mother, Wade, her guardian, has married a social butterfly, whose aimless existence and flirtations became the bane of his life. Wade’s wife becomes involved xvith Jamison Keene, a profligate, but when the latter meets Laura he transfers his to her. Keene lays a trap for Laura, but she escapes after a struggle and returns to New York. Connors visits Keene’s home to demand an accounting, but does not find him. Laura consents to a hasty marriage with Connors, but as the ceremony is in progress, he is arrested on a charge of murdering Keene, and after a short trial he is • convicted. Laura visits the home of her guardian and surprises him in the act of attempting suicide. He confesses that he had killed Keene and promises Laura that he will confess in court the next day. When he weakens, Laura dramatically exposes him and demands that he admit the crime there and then, thus re-uniting the young pair in their love.
