THE LONG, LONG TRAIL.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —You may be able to enlighten me on the following subjects: —When are the few chains of roadway from Ashley Street to Church Street to be completed? The work has been in hand about five months, and looks like taking another twelve. May I ask what this same work is to cost? One never sees the engineer or any boss, upon the job. Hav« any of the Councillors ever paid a visit there to see how the poor workmen are doing. For instance, I have seen five men and two drays stand there for fifteen minutes, while never an ounce of stuff is shifted. I have seen one man do nothing for half an hour, after which trrift first thing he did was to watch another man light his pipe, understand these half an hour, morning and afternoon, for smoko. Yet, between these occasions they stop three or four times to fill up and light up, and carry on. a iittle' conversation of their own. But, of course, they have a right to stop work for private discussion. lam cold tnat these five men and two drays actually shift twelve yards of ploughed up . ■ in one day. So I, and many ioam iau ld like to kn ow what 1 others t. u * A of roa ding are cost- ’ {.hose few dim —j am, etc. ing: the ratepaye. ‘ T jjUNT* ' . [This is regarded as - different gangs going 6n aL ' --^y times between other jobs. ane * in which this work is being don£ aas been a matter of free comment by several observers. —Ed. “M.D.T.”]
