"LONGBURN’S HEALTH.

DEFECTIVE DRAINAGE. At yesterday’s meeting of the_ Kairanga County Council, tlic chairman (Cr. J. Linklater), in referring to health matters, said there were now four cases of typhoid' fever in the Longburn township. This, it had been said, was- due to the drainage. The drains there were in a shocking condition. It was a very serious position, and if the Council were liable for the drains in the main streets, they should! take action at once.—Cr. Prousc said the water tables wcrei in bad condition, and the substance could not get away owing to (he blocking by weeds, etc. In the discussion it was suggested that the people were polluting the drains by allowing refuse into them, but the difficulty was to know how the stuff got into the drains.—Cr. Moody said the only way to improve the health of the township was to raise a loan and lay down proper sewerage.—The engineer pointed out that the drains and sumps had been cleaned out before Christmas, and should not contain anything else but rain water. —It was eventually resolved to instruct the engineer to have the. drains and sumps cleaned out immediately, and also that the Health Department be asked to again report on the conditions of the locality, in order to see what could be done for the township. .
