PECULIAR TEST CASE.
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, East nigiit
An unusual application for maintenance of a woman and child in Ireland, was made by the police. Considerable interest is attached to it, as it is the first of the kind in New Zealand. A young man was married in Belfast in 1915, and came to New Zealand the same year. He contributed nothing with the exception of his military allotment while on active service in the N.Z.K.F. in 1917. An order) was made at Belfast in his absence for payment of 14/ weekly towards the support of his wife and child, and the police sought under sections 17 and 80 of the Destitute Pensions' Act to have the order enforced. Defendant opposed it on the grounds that he was bringing his wife and child to New Zealand, but Mr Page, S.M., made an order for £ls for past maintenance, and 30/ weekly. If the wife refuses to come to the Dominion, the matter may be reopened.
