N.Z. BISLEY.

CROXTON LEADING.

WEATHER CONDITIONS PUZZLE EXPERT SHOTS.

(Per Press Association.) TRENTHAM, Last Night

"Hard going" about sums up today's shooting- over the last qualifying rounds of the Belt series of SOO, 900 and 1000 yards., The long jump faced the contestants twice, and though occasionally a man got across the obstacle creditably, the majority came down badly, indeed the road to a position in the King's Fifty was strewn with many difficulties, such as the extraordinary variations in light and wind, which in the vicinity of the targets was particularly exasperating. At the start, the changing between shots from six degrees right to three left, old hand.- who had seen this sort of thing beiore were puzzled as much as a new-comer. It is one of Trentham's peculiar characteristics that the oldest habitue never gains the confidence of the elements here. This morning heavy clouds obscured the sun in the early stages, then broke occasionally, with the result that there were patches of bright light that proved worse than the dullness, and played havoc with the elevation of short range leaders. Feast was the only one to maintain his position at the luncheon adjournment. H. Loveday got a bad spin, and fell back into step with Barkle, while Croxton assumed the lead with seven points to the good. Govenlock dropped well back. The match wis won by Kay, an outsider, with a five score in the circumstances of 86.

In the afternooi the conditions were similar to the morning:, a baffling wind and changing light spoiling many scores that opened propitiously. Two Hatches, Hawke's bay at 900 and Taranaki at 1000 yards were tired, and Croxton kept his lead all through, in spite of a hard shoot, at 1000 yards in the failing light, and finished with an aggregate of 522, a clear lead of 12 from West, 510, followed by Barkle, 508 and Feast, 507. To-morrow will be occupied with teams matches.
