LAND BALLOT.
SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS TOR KAIRANGA AND OTUROA. The land ballot in connection with the McKenzie estate at Kairanga and the Oturoa settlement near Foxton was held at Palmerston yesterday. Mr G. H. N. McLure, Commissioner of Crown Lands, presided. The morning was taken up with the examination of the applicants, of whom there were about 100 present. Many of the original applicants withdrew their names, especially in connection w'ith the Kairanga block and in several eases only one applicant appeared for a section. The balloting was remarkable for the good feeling displayed by the applicants and the successful ones came in for a good deal of chaffing as they stepped forward to sign up. Two applicants drew their own numbers and were congratulated on their good fortune. The Commissioner stated at the conclusion of the Kairanga ballot that Mr B. A, McKenzie, who had sold the property to the Government, said that it would be necessary to put stock on immediately as the grass was getting away, and he offered lo lease for grazing from any applicant who could not get stock in stx*aight away.
