HOKOWHITU IS CINDERELLA

Councillor J. B. ‘Beale referred at the Borough Council meeting last evening to a complaint laid by residents of Pahiatua Street, who pointed out that if the river flooded the overflow ran on to their private properties. He pointed out that originally there had been a water-course there, but it had been blocked up by the man who owned the property on tin south side of the road. He moved that the Council instruct the Clerk and the Engineer to consult with the Borough Solicitor as to whether the Council could compel him to open up-the drain drain. The Engineer pointed out that the land there was on the same level as the river, so that when the river rose the flooding of the property was inevitable. Councillor Beale said tin* matter had been before the Council for vears past, and was always shelved like* everything else where Hnkowhitu was concernedCouncillors: Oh, no! Councillor Beale: Yes, it is! Hokowhitu is the Cinderella cf tne town. (Laughter.) Tire motion was carried.
