Charles T. Cornford was proceeded against by the truant officer for keeping four of his children away from school for two weeks ending Bth and 15th August. Mr Ongley appeared for defendant and pleaded guilty to all eight charges. Counsel stated it was intended at the time to take the boys away on the grounds that the family was shifting to Fahiatua. When the prosecution of the headmaster came on they were allowed to remain here until the case was over. They were actually going to leave the district. Mr J. B: Skinner (truant officer) made it quite clear that when he took steps leading to the prosecution of defendant, he was in entire ignorance of tho fact that there was a criminal charge pending against the headmaster by Mrs Cornford. He did not find this out until he had visited tho school. This prosecution of his was taken up in the ordinary course of events. Passing on, Mr Skinner said Mrs Cornford had been given -warning that he (the truant officer) might take action if the children were not sent to school, and she was sent a form to fill in but this was io-nored. He was willing to withdraw four of tho charges, viz., those for the second week, as the family had now left for Fahiatua. A conviction was entered on the four charges for the week ending August Bth, and a fine of 2/ on each charge was imposed.
