NATIONALISATION A FAILURE. PROFITEERS ARE BOOMING. [By Electric Coble —Copyright.] [Aust. ami N.Z. Cable Association,] (Received Monday, 32.40 a.m.) LONDON, August 24. Mr Appleton, secretary of the General Federation of Trades Unions, states that nationalisation is unsound economically, and would be disastrous from every standpoint. A State monopoly is the most oppressive of all monopolies. He urges workers to pause before it is too late, and refuse to listen to extremists. Mr Smillio denies that the miners are responsible for the decreased output of coal, which is due to the ininoowners not developing their mines during the y/ar. Mr Smillio believes that the output will materially increase soon, owing to the present developing work. The miners realise the nation’s pressing need of a large output. The "National News" states that the cotton, woollen, lace, iron and steel trades are booming, despite the high prices of coal. Many manufacturers are unable to execute now . orders. Shares in cotton spinning companies have risen rapidly during the last few weeks.
