A Londorf cable states that H. L. Doherty, the celebrated tennis player, lias died after a long illness. Bugler B. T. Barnes, second son of Mrs M. Barnes, of Broad Street, is returning by the Corinthic. Mr J. C. MacKay, of the Palmerston branch of the Bank of Australasia, is being transferred to Feathcrston to replace the manager, Mr A. H. Knowles, who is retiring on superannuation. Mr John Allan Macdonald, business manager of the “To Koas,” the returned soldier entertainers who arc touring the Dominion, has arrived in Palmerston North to make arrangements for their appearance at the Opera House on Thursday next. Miss Daisy Stevens, daughter of the late John Stevens, was married in London on 27th May to Mr Leslie Carman Green, of the Loan and Mercantile staff, Palmerston North. The young people met on active service in Franco and w ill return to Palmers!on about the end of the year. For the positions of working foreman carpenter, foreman painter, and workshop foreman, the following selections have been made by the Wanganui Education Board: —Foreman carpenter (05 applicants), Mr J. L. Robertson, of Nelson; foreman painter (S applicants), Mr P. C. Read, of Rangataua: workshop foreman (9 applicants), Mr E. L. Miller, of Wanganui. The Education Board, with the approval of the Minister, has appointed three ‘ ‘ organising teachers ’ ’ as follows: —Mr J. Marshall, of Havelock North, for the South Ward; Mr L. Pole, of Ormond, for the Middle Ward; and Mr A. Bullians, of Palmerston North, for the North Ward. These gentlemen will assist head or sole teachers of schools placed under their charge with regard to organisation, schemes of work, methods of teaching and will advise uneertiheated teachers with regard to their course of study. The friends of Mr William Little, of Lombard Street, will regret to learn of the death of his wdfe, which occurred at the residence yesterday. The late Mrs Little, who has been residing in Palmerston North for same years, came to the district from Otago, where she was particularly well known and highly respected. Besides a husband, she leaves a grown-up family of sons and daughters, who will have the sympathy of a number of friends in their bereavement.
