ANOTHER SCHOOL FOR PALMERSTON.

RESOLUTION AT TERRACE END.

At the annual meeting of householders at Terrace End School last evening, a resolution was unanimously carried,, ■which requested the erection of another public school on the south-east side of the railway line at Terrace End. The discussion arose when the question of playing area at the Terrace End School was being debated, it being urged by several householders that to have smaller and more numerous schools would be advantageous to all concerned.* A point in favour of the erection of an additional school was that of obviating the necessity ox so many children having to cross the railway line to reach the present school. Others maintained that if another school was erected the necescity of enlarging the playing area of the present one would not become necessary. It would also eliminate the •matter of overcrowding, not only to Terraco End but also to College Street. In moving the resolution, Mr A. W. Sutton referred to the recent fatal accident on the railway, when a schoolboy lost his life. It had been stated by other householders that the chances of sinking the lines or of getting some really effective warning were very small. His motion w*as: “That this meeting of householders resident in the Terrace End School district respectfully request the Education Board to immediately consider the question of erecting another school on the southeast side of the railway line for the following reasons:—(l) On account of the constant danger to the school children in having to cross the railway line four times daily on their way to and from school; (2) on account of the overcrowding at both College. Street and Terrace End Schools; (3) on account of the continued increase in population, which will necessitate the erection of another school in the near future, and, further, we wish to point out that at least one fatal accident has happened at this particular crossing, and that the erection of another school would obviate the necessity of children crossing the railway line., and at the same time relieve parents of the constant anxiety during the time their children are absent from home attending school.*’ The motion -was carried unanimously.
