DANNEVIRKE DOINGS. The two Mayoral contestants, Messrs G. Anderson and Campbell Thomson, will address the electors on Tuesday night. * ‘ ‘ Mr and Mrs C. Steel, of Ti Papatuku, have lost by death their throe-year-old daughter, Mary Donal. Mr Younghusband, Government Auditor, is on an official visit here. Ensign Campion has returned from a fortnight’s holiday in Taranaki. Mr J. Laurenson, of the G.P.O. Wellington, has been on Departmental inquiry business hero. Mr Campbell’-Thomson has been spending the past few days in Auckland. The U.S.A.’s annual re-union on Ani:ac Day evening was a big success. Major Mackay presided. Several honary members were among those present. A short toast-list was gone through and several musical items wore given. A tribute was paid to the excellent work of Mr Quigley, secretary of' the War i Relief Association. The speakers were : Major Mackay, Lieut, Larsen, Messrs j Best, Quigley, C. 11. Gillam, L. C. A public meeting Is to be held in a few days to arrange for peace celebrations. It is intended to make a systematic and effective display, and a sum of £2OO inclusive of Government subsidy, is to be spent on the celebrations. The temporary buildings in the firej swept area were again discussed by the Borough Council and it was agreed on the motion of Cr Dobson that Mr Webber should bo given six months’ notice to remove his temporary premises in High Street. This building was used as a prohibition office, but owing to damage by some person one of the windows had to be boarded up. A motion by Cr Dobson that the temporary buildings occupied by Messrs Armstrong and Morrison and Collett and Son be removed within six months lapsed for want of a seconder. Sergt. W. C. A. Bell, of Te Rehunga, is due home shortly. Ho is a son of Mr W. Bell.

Valedictory addresses were given by Mayor and Councillors at the final meeting of the presept council. The speakers included the Mayor (Air Eansom), Crs. J. Drummond, Carston and Menefy (who are all retiring from municipal politics) and Crs. Anderson (a mayoral candidate) and Dobson. The speakers were of a eulogistic character and very complimentary references were made bj r the speakers to the outstanding ability and great services rendered to the borough for many 4 years by Air Ransom. The latter, in reply, reviewed his long association with the council, mentioned some of the important undertakings and the highly satisfactory position of the borough, and he urged a progressive policy. Mr Ransom stated that he would refer further to borough affairs at the installation of the new council. On concluding, ho was accorded a hearty round of applause. Quarrymen at Ormondville arc earning big money, 18/ a day. The Borough Council received a circular letter from the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce relative to the control of main arterial roads, suggesting a tyre tax and the appointment of a non-political body of engineers. The Mayor alluded to the importance of the matter and supported the idea. The matter was referred to the incoming council.

The Borough Council resolved, on the motion of the Mayor, that while it was anxious to assist in every reasonable way, the commencement of the _ Wai-kare-Moana scheme, it saw' no justifiable reason why the local bodies concerned should be asked to accept a guarantee liability us proposed by the Waikarc-Moana Hydro-Electric League. Over 800 head of stock were slaughtered at the local abattoirs in March, the fees and rents totalling £ll4.

Anglican parishioners have _ recommended the new vestry to abolish pew rents, Messrs H, Graham and Johnston have been elected synodsmon for the local Anglican Church for the next three years.
