W.C.T.U.

THE ANNUAL CONVENTION.

The W.C.T.U. convention was continued in Napier on Friday, when there was a general discussion of plans for the 1919 campaign. Many useful suggestions were made for gaining the support of those who failed to vote for prohibition last election. In connection with this subject, Mrs Lee Cowie brought forward scheme for the opening of recreation rooms to replace open bars when prohibition is carried; and also a suggestion that the union use its influence to have the.waste lands north of Auckland increasingly utilised for the grape industry. She showed that grape-growing could bo made more profitable by using the fruit for manufacturing sugar and cream of tartar and by drying it for raisins, than by selling it to the brewers.

A letter was read giving an invitation to the union to send a delegate from each district to the town-planning conference to be held in Wellington during next month. These delegates would number 18. Three delegates to represent the Dominion union w r ere also invited to be present, making the total representation from the W.C.T.U. 21. The report on tho Maori w r ork was then taken. Owing to the epidemic and to the lack of organisation for this branch, tho year’s work has not been as successful as usual. Very useful suggestions were made by delegates for the further extension of this very necessary branch of the union’s work.
