HOSPITAL MATTERS.

Our reporters toll us that the Palmerston Hospital Board is the most hopeloss body from their point of view that they have attended at any time or place. This arises largely from the fact that it is unwcildy—in fact an “incongruous mass of fortuitous atoms ,} drawn from a wide constituency. It is Impossible for the majority of these representatives to “keep tag'* on what is going on from month to month, and they mostly sit silent while the desultory debates and broken sequences of the Board’s procedure arc carried forward. But there is this much to bo said. Surface indications in this case arc deceptive. There must be a great deal of effective work done which does not appear on the surface because t!u> hospital is one of our most creditable institutions. Ho doubt this is largely due to the internal management which on all reports is excellent. 1’ or the Hospital Board election there arc seven candidates for three seats, two women, four laymen and a doctor —indeed an embarrassment of riches. Mo have been asked to endorse the programme and candidature of the representative of the united Lodges, Mr F. Pycroft. We certainly like the programme, and we think that Mr Pycroft would give effective service. Mrs Crabb, Mrs Gill? Dr Whitaker and Mr Hash have already considerable performances to recommend them. Whoever is elected it will still be a good choice.
