W.C.T.U.

34tH ANNUAL CONVENTION.

The convention proper commenced at Napier on. Thursday morning at 9 o'clock, with an attendance of 84 delegates, of whom 37 were present tor the first time. It was noted that many of these new delegates were young people. The main part of the day was taken up with the appointing of committees and the receiving of reports from Dominion officers and •Dominion superintendents of departments, it was pointed out that the usm'.i derail work of the departments had been partly pushed, aside in order the better to assist the Alliance in the past campaign.

An interesting item in the Dominion corresponding secretary's report was the anouncement that Hiss Euth Atkinson, of Nelson, ex vice-president for the Dominion, had been chosen as a member of the delegation sent to Paris to endeavour to obtain for women an official seat at the Peace Conference. As one delegate pointed out to the convention, this would never have been though of if women's franchise had not been gained in England. During the afternoon the president delivered her convention address, the dominant note of which was a determination, in spite of the late defeat, to fight harder than ever the campaign already started for the November election. Miss Don placed before convention the reasons for the prohibition party's failure to gain a decisive majority at the last election and called on delegates to urge their unions to do all in their power to win over the sections of the community responsible for the continuance majority. At the conclusion of the address the convention business was again resumed and arrangements made for evening meetings. This concluded the day's business and convention was adjourned till 9.30 on Friday morning.
