DANNEVXEKE DOINGS. Several solicitors and land agents .ire among those nominated for the Borough Council. In all there are .17 candidates for the Council and two for the Mayoralty. as follows: —Mayoralty: Messrs G. I. Anderson and Campbell-Thomson. Council: S. Ashcroft, F. G. Bolt, \V. Dobson, P, W. Dorrington, D. Drumond, E. 11. Fraser, O. H. Gillam, H. Graham, JI. Hewatt, 11. K. Hibbard, J. Livingstone, C. Me Gibbon, A. B. Mollgard, T. J. Maloney, H. Eies, W. Snell, C. 11. Thompson. Messrs Ashcroft, Drumond, Dobson, Graham, Anderson and Carap-bell-Thomson are members of the retiring Council. Pastor Rios is an exmayor of the town. Messrs Snell and Eies have been nominated for seats on the Hospital Board. Pastor Hies intends addressing the electors next Monday. Mr Ivan L. Knight, solicitor, intended being a candidate for the Council, but his nomination was too late. Those who are not seeking re-election are Crs. J. Drumond, Mencfy and Carston.

Messrs J. S. Ferguson and B. J. Eossltor have been nominated for the position of delegate to the special conference of the A.S.E.S. The ballot for

delegate takes place shortly. Au/.ac Day will be observed by a united commemoration service at II a.m. in the Coronation Hall, and a reunion of returned soldiers at night. The local stable-keepers have resolved •to double the charges for stands. Private George Eyles, a Main Body man, formerly a local sign-w’ritcr, is now employed in writing inscriptions on tombstones of New Zealand soldiers who fell in France,

This (Friday) evening the Dannevirke branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association will hold a re-union in the Oddfellow’s’ Hall, the Soldiers’ Institute not being large enough to accommodate the number expected to attend. An excellent and appropriate programme has been arranged, and the traditions of this great day cannot fail to impress upon ex-soldiers the importance of remembering the occasion in a manner worthy of the sacrifices made by their gallant comrades. Honorary members of the association arc cordially invited to attend, and it is scarcely necessary to urge all soldiers to make a point of being present. For drunkenness and theft, justices ou Thursday sentenced Wm. C. Rhodes to six months’ imprisonment. Accused assaulted Fred Kendall, a boardinghouse keeper, and also stole from the railway luggage room a portmanteau belonging to Mrs Prior. His previous record is a bad one.

A combined religious service will be held in the Town Hall to-day (Friday) in memory of Anzac Day. The Mayor will preside. Returned soldiers, territorials and senior cadets are expected to bo present. There will also be special services in the various churches. A dance in aid of the hall fund will be held in the Te Rehunga Hall to-night (Friday). At a largely-attended welcome-home service at Kiritaki, Mr J. D. G-alioway, on behalf of the settlers, presented Privates Fletcher, Hunt and Marshall with a framed testimonial. Mr Galloway made one of his happy telling speeches, for which ho received much applause. Miss Webb, Mrs Fletcher and Messrs Short and W. Brighouse supplied the music. Mr H. H. Knowles as M.C. acquitted himself splendidly. A capital supper was provided. Private Fletcher returned thanks on behalf of the soldiers.

Unusual interest is being taken in the municipal contests and a big poll is anticipated. The candidates for the mayoralty are working quietly and systematically, while several of the candidates are also active.

The executive of the War Relief Association met on Thursday afternoon and dealt with several urgent cases for assistance.

Mr H, G. Smith, clerk of the court, leaves next Thursday to take up his new appointment at Hastings, So far his successor here is not known. The local Repatriation Committee are meeting frequently and considering at length the various matters brought before it. It is stated that certain “tickets” will be run in connection, viith the municipal elections, while certain candidates expect to get almost block votes from certain sections of the community. Mr H. M. Rics is going to give his views on municipal and hospital matters to the public at the Town Hall on Monday night. Questions are invited.

PAIIIATUA PAHS. There will be no municipal contest at Pahiatua, as the following have been elected unapposed: —Mayoralty: Mr J. D. C. Crewe. Council: Messrs J. D. Wilson, E. Sullivan, W. Lewis, A. Ross, A. Barrell, W. C. Ecclcton, J. R. Cook, W, W. Scott, S. T. Tiuney. Hospital Board: Mr J. D. Wilson. The Mangatainoka athletic sports gathering proved a financial success despite the bad weather. The principal events wore won by F. Kilminster (Masterton), K. S. Glendinning, D. Groves, Nesdale, Keichenboch, Donald, and Rowe, D. Scott (Picton), Miss V. Campbell and Miss Needham were the most successful in the Highland events. Mr Leslie Brown, returned soldier, son of Mr A. Brown, of Nguturi, has died at Waipuknrau. Mr F. C. Boflkott, the new agricultural instructor, is taking up his residence at Mangatainoka, Miss Weitzol, late schoolmistress at Horoeka, was tendered a social and presented with a handbag - .
