P.N. BOWLING CLUB
OPENING DAY. In spite of the bitterly cold wind there was an exceptionally good assemblage of members and visitors at the opening of the Palmerston North Bowling Club yesterday afternoon. Mr J. H. Stevens, the Club's president, opened the green. Mr Stevens said ho was pleased to announce that the club was opening its season with twenty-five new members and that three old players had volunteered their services as instructors. After a few very fitting remarks in regard to the Club and the pastime, the president called on Mrs Stevens to play the first "jack." This being completed, the president, played the first bowl. , . A match between the Club and visitors was then played. Eleven rinks were operating and some fine play was witnessed. The results of the various rinks are as follows, the skip's name only being given:—Wardrop (Woodville) 25 v. Griggs (P.N.) 17; Larking (Shannon) 15 v. Drew (P.N.) 14, Forest (Terrace End) 32 v. F. Mowlem (P.N.) 13; Webb (P.N.) 22 v. Fletcher (Terrace End) 17; J. A. Nash (P.N.) 16 v. Jas. Young (P.N.) 0; Webley (Foxton) 28 v. T. H. Hodgson (P.N.) 22; Jolly (PN.) 27 v. Clements (Terrace End) 20; H. Nash (P.N.) 23 v. Harford (Feilding) IS; Brophy (P.N.) 18 v. Nye (Foxton) 9; Sinclair (Terrace End) 26 v. Rimmer (Foxton) 22; Lawrence (Manawatu) 24 v. Dixon (P.N.) 17. . The following is a list of the new members: —H. Stacey, A. Hannay, J. J. Hill, A. A. Mitchell, W. J. Capp, P. O 'Connor, C. R. Beattie, H. F. Gibbons, F. W. Rapley, C. Ferguson, G. Holdaway, J. B. Wilton, J. Murray,. R. Coker. G. Wilson, A. Burgess, J. Bayliss, E. Pickering, V. Goldfinch, W. B. O'Callaghan, A. F. Wimsett, T. Manson, T. Smith, T. R. Hodder and W. Turner. The three volunteer instructors are: —Messrs J. H. Simmonds, A. Aiken and J. Smith. Mr Fred Mowlem has been nominated as the club's green superintendent. During the afternoon the ladies dispensed afternoon tea which was greatly appreciated.
