MEN WHO WON’T PAY. > y _______ ! A meeting of settlers in the Hal- , combe, Kakariki, Stanway, and Tokorangi districts was held at Halcombe on Friday night to consider the question of the continuance of the rural delivery of mail matter in these parts. Mr J. Morrison, of Tokorangi, and Mr McElroy, of Halcombe, as conveners, addressed the meeting at some length, and explained that the .Postal Department wanted a continuance of the previous guarantee before entering into a new contract for next year. Both ; Messrs Morrison and McElroy stated j that they were not prepared to act as : guarantors again unless the w'holo of ; the settlers who received mail matter ’ contributed to the cost. They stated ! that a number of the settlers refused I to subscribe although they were parj ticipating in all the benefits. It was I pointed out that the service was one of S the best in the Dominion, and tho benefits derived were second to none. After discussing the question at great length, the old guarantors agreoiT to continue, provided that all on tho route subscribed towards tho guarantee required by the Department. Steps arc also to bo taken to cut out the service from those who still refuse to pay. Messrs Morrison, James, and McElroy were thanked for the great interest they had taken in securing the service, which had been a boon to the district.
