French Advance a Mile
700 PRISONERS TAKEN. [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Sunday, 7.10 p.m.) LONDON, July 27. A French communique at 3.30 a.ra. stated: South of the Ourcq, there is reciprocal artillery activity, but no infantry lighting. Wo captured north-west of the Marne on Thursday evening, Previl Savarde farm, and drove back the enemy to the southern outskirts of Pont-a-Binson, Orquigny and Viiler sous Chatillon. Altogether 700 prisoners were taken on the 25th inst. at Ville Montoire and Oulchy le Chateau. Local attacks undertaken in the Champagne after the breaking of the enemy offensive, resulted, notwithstanding the enemy’s resistance, in our advancing a mile ©n a front of thirteen miles east of Suippo and north of a general line through St. Hilairc-lo-Graudo, Souain and Mcsuil les Hurlus. We recaptured the whole of the Main-de-Massigcs, and reoccupied our old first lines in that region. Wc captured in these operations .1100 prisoners and seven guns. Wo brought down seven enemy aeroplanes and thc British accounted for eighteen. On the 25th we dropped 38 tons of bombs by day and night on stations, roads, hangars and dumps near tin* battlefield. Fires and explosions were observed. The British dropped four tons of bombs on Ba/.oches, Fere-en-Tanlemus, and Mont Notre Dame.
