Thomson as Journalist

WILL POUND PATRIOTIC PAPER. Mr Wm. Thomson announced his intention last night at Everybody's Theatre of establishing another newspaper in Palmerston North. “What is absolutely necessary in Palmerston North at the present time,” said he, "is another newspaper. At the present time we are suffering under an incubus. You know what that means. The papers here stand in the road of all progressive movements and sneer. We never know where they are even in regard to the German question. They sit on the rail to sec what the public is going to do, and then say, ‘Ah! Ha! that is what we have been suggesting all the time.” Mr Thomson expressed the belief that the spirit of the people in Palmerston North was as loyal as that of any part of the universe. He had lived among them for 2(1 years and knew. He had been approached in the matter of establishing a paper and had been offered £250 by one man and £IOO by another. The total cost would be about £20,000. He anticipated little difficulty in finding the money, and he felt he would be loyally supported with advertisements. (Applause.)
