MILITARY APPEALS

The Appeal Board sat yesterday before Mr .D. McLaren (chairman), M. J. Mack and A. O. Considine. Captain Walker represented the military authorities

The appeal of John Gemmell for the return of his son, F. W. Gemmell, from active service was declined.

Rifleman C. S. Dewe, of Feilding, a returned soldier, applied for extension of leave on account of his health. The Board having no power to deal with matters of health, declined the application. Mr Haggitt appeared for appellant. The application of Lyndon Griffiths, Otaki, a returned soldier, for extension of leave was considered. The Board decided to recommend the granting of two months’ leave. Mr Harper appeared for appellant. Mr Ongley appeared for F.dwin Henry Burgess, butter factory assistant, Makino, whose appeal was declined, leave being granted until 28th August, Bergt. B. N. Sandilands, Feilding, a returned soldier, appealed for total exemption. He was recommended for three months’ leave.

Thomas Heayns appealed for his son, Arthur Heayns, farm labourer, Onga* rue. He had two sons at tho war and could not carry on the farm alone. The appeal was adjourned sine die, provided appellant reported if one son returned, or that ho had sold his property. The appeal of S. R. Lancaster for his son, James O. Lancaster (Mr H. G. Moore) was withdrawn, leave being granted until 28th August. The appeal of Arthur Francis Palmer, farm labourer, Rewe, was allowed, as he was under age. G. H. Massey appealed for his brother, H. W. Passey, who was on active service. Mr Oakley appeared for appellant, who stated he had been from the forces owing to an operation for appendicitis while en route for -Prance. He was prepared to re-enlist if his brother was returned from the fronj:. ‘ The Board decided to recommend that his brother be returned if unfit.

Frank Bertram Chectham. dairy farmer, Bunnythorpe (Mr Oakley) appealed for exemption. The case had been previously heard. He .farmed 150 acres and milked 80 cows: —Adjourned until-next sitting. The appeal of Robert Charles Collins, farmer, Shannon (Mr Oakley) was dismissed. leave being granted until October,

Tho appeal of Walter Kirkland, tailor and mercer, Shannon, was dismissed, leave being granted until th e September draft.

Tho appeal of James Charles Dixon, dairyman, Palmerston North, was dismissed owing to non-appearance of appellant. • William Henry Boon, storekeeper, Palmerston North (Mr Oakley) stated he 'was in negotiations for the management of his business during his ab t sence.~Appeal dismissed, leave being granted until September. The appeal of Thomas Edward Drake,

flaxhand, Shannon, was adjourned to the first sitting after the 10th August. William Henry Currie, labourer, Foxton, appealed for exemption on the grounds that he was an only son.— r Appeal dismissed. PUREBRED STOCK. David Buick, farmer, Palmerston North (Mr Ongley) stated he was married with one child, and he farmed 67 .acres leasehold; also 100 acres freehold. He leased the property from his father. He had 104 stud Romney sheep, 53 milking cows and other stock. He milked 27 cows last year. They were nearly all purebred Shorthorn, and a very valuable herd. He could got a general farmhand, but it would not bo possible to get a man to undertake all the detail work connected with stud cattle. He also managed 278 acres for his father, running about 1100 sheep. There were also 11 horses en his own property, mostly thoroughbreds. Mr Madk; “Are thoroughbred horses essentials?”

Appellant: “They have to be essential—y»n can’t give them away.” Mr McLaren: “It is not tho horse*, it’s the people who are ‘given

away.’ ”

Appellant did not race horses; his father did. The horses were just running on the farm with the sheep. Appeal adjourned until Ist sitting after 10th August.

The appeal of W. E. Thomas, Kauwhata ("Mr Ongle}’) was adjo*wicd until the October sitting-. Samuel Christmas, flourmiller, Feilding, was granted leave until September.

Dow and Sporle, wool-scourers, Fcilding, appealed for Charles Eustace, their engine-driver (Mr Cooper). The Board adjourned the ease until next sitting. The appeal of Harold R. Thorbnrn, merchant tailor, Palmerston North (Mr -11. S. Fletcher) was adjourned until next silting.
