PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS.

Mr Jack Mcßae, son of Mr and Mrs F. S. Mcßae, who has just reached military age, enlisted for service and went into camp yesterday with the 44th draft. One of Hawke’s Bay’s earliest settlers and one of the fast diminishing band of the Maori war veterans, in the person of Mr Charles Dolbel, passed away at his residence, Napier, on Wednesday at the age of 76 years. The late Mr Dolbel was born in Jersey, Channel Islands, in the year 1841, and arrived in New Zealand in 1858. The personnel of the First Military Service Board, which is now sitting in Palmerston, has undergone a temporary change. Mr D. McLaren is acting as chairman during the absence of Mr D. G. A. Cooper. Mr W. Perry was temporarily replaced by Mr G. Williams, but Mr A. O. Considine is now acting in his place, and Mr M. J. Mack completes. The secretary, Mr W. A. Walsh, is on leave owing to the death of his brother, and Mr Hall is undertaking his duties.

At All Saints’ Church yesterday Mr Walter Bailey Stock, eldest son of the late C. K. Stock, of New Plymouth, and Mrs Stock, Palmerston, was married to Mrs Rachael Matthews Peatic > of• Palmerston North. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. G. Blackbourne. The bride, who was given away by Mr L. Driver, of Palmerston North, wore a grey gaberdine costume with a black hat, and carried a largo bridal bouquet. Miss S. Dove was bridesmaid, her costume being of navy blue, trimmed with fur. After the ceremony a reception was held at the White House.

Captain F. F. Newman, son of Dr A. K. Newman, M.P., has been awarded the Military Cross. Captain Newman went to England in 1915, and obtained his commission in the Royal Field Artillery. Later he was promoted to be lien tenant, and at the time of the first big German push in March, he was attached to a battery with the Fifth Army. The British infantry had retired and Lieutenant Newman’s guns on one ridge were confronted with the German artillery advancing over another ridge. By his coolness and determination Lieutenant Newman kept his guns in action until the infantry could come up, so that the artillery was saved. For this he earned high commendation from his superior officer, and was promoted to a captaincy and recommended for the Military Cross. F. de Berry; Tunakotekote, acting sole teacher. Miss J. D. Storrier; Makohau, sole teachers, Miss A. Beard; Campbell Street, acting Ist asst., Mr A. Bulians; Campbell Street, 7th asst., Miss J. Bradley; Campbell Street, Bth asst., Miss E. Pigott; Campbell Street, &th asst.. Miss P. Seeker; Foxton, 4th asst., Miss V. H. Hay. Dollar Days have caught on—and no wonder!
