Price of Meat.

MIDDLEMAN'S PROFIT.

ACTION BY HAWKE'S BAY SHEEPFARMER. Recently some remarks by Sir George Clifford were reported expressing his opinion that the price of meat was likely to rise shortly. Hawke's Bay sheepfarmers have been exercised over the matter and one of them, Mr G. P. Donnelly, has taken steps to bring their views before the authorities. . The following is a copy of a telegram despatched by Mr G. P. Donnelly to London through his agents on September 25:—Deliver message as follows to Mr Coates: Suggest Imperial Government pay for meat on basis Australian agreement; our meat higher grade. Board of Trade should regulate London prices for Argentine on pre-war basis, lower than New Zealand; also regulate retail prices so that excessive profits cannot be made by retail and middlemen. Interview Mr Massey. Farmers' meetings in xjominion clamouring for changes. Producers would not object if Imperial Government or consumers got benefit. Dominion lost £3,000,000 last year's prices which benefited retail and middlemen only. Consult Mr McLean, and see High Commissioner. Kia Ora. (Signed) G. P. Donnelly. IT'S HARD TO WORK.
