NOTES. Hawke's Bay Races open to-day, marking Mr H. S. Moss's initial venture as Secretary. The meeting looks a sure -success. The Hawke 's Bay Guineas have disappeared from the programme this year, which will be regretted by many old sports. However,, the fields of one, two and three horses that have appeared lately in Guineas fields or other classic races are likely to scare a few more clubs. Jem and Bon Reve should make the Hurdles an interesting contest, the latter being most' likely, now that he has struck form, to be best backed. Lingerie is not engaged in the Stakes, and Estland, who is reported to be a fine colt,, will most likely be {favourite. Mr Gaisford's Astrophel is given a good name in some quarters. Balboa will make his re-appearance in the Spring Handicap, and there will be a number of New Zealand Cup candidates lined up at the barrier. Atuatoro and Blackall will have supporters. Sea Lord is stated to he himself again, and this particular prad has the faculty of putting his four supports over the ground at a great rate when he is doing his best.

Punedin Eaces are saon on the menu, and in the land where porridge is on the breakfast table, and Scotch mist sometimes about, things are getting busy, A further cloud of the New Zealand Cup candidates will be seen out there, Y

The Brewer was third at Kurow, so that there was no shouting after all.

Trentham Rose was a royal defeat for the optimists, and the Kurow results made many a punter wish that he played chess, or had some other way of amusing himself. Bellrock accounted for the heat in question, and the well-backed one was never sighted on the voyage. The trip by the way was cut out in 50 sees., So that none of the prads stopped on the way for a bite of grass.

Austin was sold after the Wanganui Meeting, being purchased by Mr H. Johnston, of Feilding, for £2OO.

Master Lupin is at worx again, and lobking well.

W. Price will ride Bee, Idyllic, Hyllus, ana Hyginas at Hawke's Bay to-day. ' ,„\

A. J. McFlinn, who Went aver to Australia to ride Kooya and Co. in thier hurdle engagements, put in a little spare time by riding Zululand to victory at Gosford. New Zealand horses with New Zealand riders up, will soon be all starting at odds on in the land of the Cornstalks.

According to Sydney writers, Sasanoff is regarded as a very likely one in the Caulfield Cup this year. The Australian race-courses seem to be as good for New Zealanders this year as the Dobruja is for the Rumanians.

Mr T. Lloyd, the well-known trainer, has taken up residence in Otaki. He ha 9 under his charge Glorify, Black Ada, Texas, and a promising two-year-old.

. * Good news for Sports. Aif. Mahon has just received another shipment of those hatß which enabled so many sports to pick winners at the winter meetings. Call in and make your selection early as there is bound to bo a rush to get one of these fashionable articles. There is also a fine selection of new ties, and those who wear a Mahon hat and tie are sure to do well at oil the m«»«tiniHi. #
