ORPHEUS SOCIETY

A SPLENDID CONCERT. * Last evening the Opera House. was well filled when the Palmerston North Orpheus Society gave their fifteenth grand conecrt. It proved to be a delightful entertainment, the sirgers having reached a very high standard of efficiency, and every number vvps' harmoniously rendered. The members have been practising assiduously since June last, and they are to be congratulated on their splendid performance. Mr M. Cohen, conductor of the Saciety, who has been- untiring in his efforts, has reason to be proud and gratified at the splendid success attained %st evening. L Thfc opening number was a part song, "The Crusader's War Song" (R. G. Thompson). It is a rather difficult piece, but the members werequite'equal to it, and the rendition greatly pleased. The tenor solo was taken by Mr J. Rogers, whbse fine voice was heard to great advantage. Very quaint, and rendered :n a capital, crisp style, was "A Franklyn's Dogge Leaped over a Style,'' a piece fpom '' The Ingoldsby Legends.''' ' Mr S. E. Carson acted as soloist in the rendition of the part song, "Gentle Sounds aVe Floating" (J. G. Muller). Mr/Carson's voice was admirably suited to the piece, and the audience demanded more. The rendering of "Tattlebury Market" (C. H. Lewis) was particularly good, the quaint humour being splendidly brought out. Other numbers given wefe "A Waltz of Dreamland" (Laurent de Rills), "In Absence" (Phoebe Cary), "Come Back to Erin," and "The Day's Farewell" (Nessler). The Society were very fortunate in having the assistance of Miss Mina Caldow and Miss Winifred Lonsdale, two very talented Welling-, tonians. Miss Caldow has a most beautiful voice with a splendid range. Her rendering of "Softly Awakens My Heart'' was delightful, and showed the magnificent voice of the singer to great advantag/. Her encore numbers were "The Laddies Who Play the Game" and "I Hear You Calling Me " In the second part Miss Callow gave (a) "Out of My Smil's Great Gladness" and (b) "Inter Nos " Twice recalled, she greatly pleased with "Till the Boys Come Home" and "Knitting." Miss Caldow richly deserved the flattering reception accorded her. Miss Lonsdale is a charming entertainer, who has W ay with tier'' tlmfc linnipdifttny captivates the audience. In rendeiing humorous pieces she has a style all her own, which is charming and fascinating. Her first piece was "The (urate and the Maid,", and on a recall "Janie." In the second halt she was loudly applauded for her rendering of "Agatha Green," and recalls '* Plum Stones," "Naughty Boy, and "Jammy Face." Miss Stanley Bett played the accompaniments in an accomplished and finished manner. The arrangements for the concert were in the hands of the hon. secre- j tary, Mr S. E. Carsonp and they were of course complete in every detail.
