MENACE TO FLAXMILLERS
THE FLAX GRUB. Local fia'tfmilTers state that, tire fla* grub is causing considerable anxiety to millers in the district and particularly ill the vicinity of Rangitnne. The grub has also made its appearance in 'the Kairanga swamps, where it was never noticed before. For the past few seasons the grub has not been particularly active in the leaf, but thjs year it appears to be developing in an alarming extent. A Times representative was yesterday shown a Sample of the flax where the grub had been operating. The fibre was practically cut through and rendered al most useless. Recognising the seriousness of the situation, the Agricultural Department sent Dr. Cockayne, Government Biologist, to inspect the infested area in Rangitane swamps with a view to ascertaining if something could not be done to exterminate the pest. It is thought by millers that the grub, which resembles a caterpillar, will be difficult to eradicate.
