Miss Zoe Gillespie left Palmerston yesterday for a lengthy holiday to Timaru and Otago. Mr H. Hager, deputy chief inspector of factories, and Mr W. Temple, Government architect, were visitors to Palmerston yesterday.

Mr J. C. Free, of Southbridge, has been selected by a conference of Liberals to contest the Ellesmere seat, —Presi Association,

Mrs S. B. Lancaster, wkO§6 death was reported yesterday, was 46 years of age. Ske leaves six sons and three daughters. Mrs Anderson, of Aokautere, is the only married daughter, while one of the sons, Clive, is at present in Samoa, where he went as a member of the Expeditionary Force. >

Deaths are reported of Mrs Leigh, of Turakina, who was born on the ship Blenheim in the Bay of Biscay in 1840; Mr John Armstrong, of Eastown railway workshops; Mrs H. Pilcher, of Wellingtoa; Mrs Crichton, relict of Mr George Crichton, of Feilding, aged 74; and Mr R. B. Shalders, founder of the Y.M.C.A. in Auckland, aged 90.

The Rev. J. E. Archibald, whose death is reported to-day, was F7 years I of age. He was born at Skene, in Scotland, and became a minister of the Presbyterian Church, from which h® resigned owing to ill-health and came to New Zealand 26 years ago.
