MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Yesterday before Air T. W. Poynton, S.M., two lirst offenders of drunkenness who had been locked up since Saturday were convicted and discharged. Two others who did not appear were lined 5s each. Ernest Vincent, on a charge of disorderly conduct in the Square on Alay 2."., was remanded for a week. Donald Walker was lined 2s (id and 2s costs for allowing a chimney to catch lire on Alay 2!ith. Joseph Falke, alias Watson, concerned in ;i series of house-breaking charges, was charged with breaking and entering the dwelling of H. Waldegrave, on January 12 last, and stealing a gold chain, a rolled gold sovereign case, and a cheque book, of the total value of £lO. Henry Richard Waldegrave said that on Jaifia-y Ui, o i rising, he found his prem : -es had beer entered by a front window. He missed his watch and chain and sovereign case. A gold sovereign case (produced) witness identified as similar to the one taken. Witness's cheque book was also taken. A little later he discovered his gold watch in the sitting room. Acting-Detective Sweeney sain fruit he and Constable (row arrested accused on April 25 last on a series of charges, ami 011 him was found a sovereign case. On May 7 witness was escorting accused t-> Napier when he said that the sovereign case found on him was Waldegrave "s. and added. "I was all over his house."' Accused, who had nothing to sa.v to the charge, pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court, Wellington, for sentence. Reserved judgment was given in tne case in which Charles Blackburn was proceeded against by the Borough Inspector. on a charge that on April 2!>, he allowed his son to act as driver of his car. which w as plying for hire, defendant's son not being a licensed driver. The defem e was that defendant's son was sent to take a party to the Manawatu races by arrangement, and was not plying for hire. The Magistrate held defendant guilty of a breach of the by-law and convicted and fined him ss. Court costs 7s. and solicitor 's fee .CI !s.
