The Daly Telegraph says the Jockey Club is considering the effect of the Calcutta Sweep on the Derby inducing owners for a consideration to start their horse. Prominent members opine that the practice is injurious to sporting and the character of the world 3 greatest race. SALE OF RACING STOCK. Press Association —By Telegraph. TIMARU, May 29. Mr W. H. Palmer's racing stock was offered at auction to-day at Washdyke. The sales were:—The steeplechaser The Brewer, 255gns, to James Smith, of Dunedin; and John Bunyan, 95gns, to H. Elworthy. Martel was passed in at lOOgns, but a sale is pending at a price beyond that. There was poor demand for hacks, the highest price being 33gns.
