Collins also proved himself a safe batsman, his principal scoring strokes being on the on side. Armstrong's driving was very fine, while his defence was sound. In fact all of the visitors were good scorers in front of the wicket, the drive and hits to the on side being much in evidence. The Manawatu fielding was, with a few exceptions, very poor, the fieldsmen waiting for the ball to come to them instead of moving quickly to the ball, and returning smartly. The fieldsmen also tired towards the end of the game. G. Greer made a splendid catch off his own bowling.
