FIRES. WELLINGTON, yesterday. The skating rink at Kilbirnie was burned yesterday. There had been a carnival on Saturday night, and it is supposed the fire, which originated in the skate room, was caused by a lighted match or cigarette being thrown on the floor. Only the tea room was saved. The building was only erected a short time ago. It was insured for £3OOO, and the furniture, etc., for £4OO. The loss above that is about £IHOO. Last evening a fire occurred in Asher's furniture warehouse, Vivian street. The workshop was destroyed and the contents and the rest of the building, were damaged by smoke and heat. The contents were insured for £4OO. MOTOR CAR MISHAP. WHILE GOING TO GOLF. WANGANUI, to-day. As a motor car containing Messrs Arthur Duncan, Arthur Gillies, Harold Thomson and Gonville Saunders, wellknown golfers, was proceeding to the gold links this morning the front wheel of the car side slipped when the driver attempted to clear a dog in the main street. The spokes of the wheel broke, the tyre burst, and the car turned completely over. Duncan, Giles and Saunders, who were in the back seat, were thrown clear of the car, escaping with a few bruises. The driver of the- car, a man named Carter, fell fairly on the side of his head inside the car and was picked up unconscious. Thomson also fell on the side of his head, with the car on top of him. Both men were carried into adjoining shops and medical aid was sought. Tho driver soon recovered consciousness and Thompson also revived later. He sustained strained muscles of an arm but apparently neither had any bones broken, though their faces were much cut about and their bodies bruised. The car was eo«siderably smashed.
