RACE HORSE CARRIAGE.
MINISTER INTERVIEWED. HIS STATEMENT.
(Fr«M Allocation.--By T»l«Gra&h. Christchurch, Last Night. The Minister of Railways has repled through the president of the Racing Conference to representations place i before him in July last by a deputation from the Racing Conference.
The Minister states that very strict instuctions have been given regarding cleaning stock wagons, but curing tiie busy season owners of racehorses prefer to have wagons supplied before being cleaned rather than have a' y slight delay. Special care was taken in connection with the cleaning and disinfection of the trucks in which animals known to be diseased lave been conveyed. Instructions were given some time ago that each horse box s on Id be provided with a colza roof lamp, and instances whf.re this had not been done supplied would be investigate '.
The ' nly apparent advantages possesse < by a class ' orse box as used in Westralia and Qneenslani is the provision of a double roof and a water tank and cushioned seats in the grooms' compartment. Suggested imp ovements anl alterations to horse boxes now in use on t e New Zealand jailways were invited and the matter would be again referred to the Department's officers.
As to the co veyauce of lacehorscs by special trains t »e Minister states that provided owners combined and give a loa I of twenty-five boxes or fifty Worses, fie Department would run special trains if convenient for trie conveyance of horses from Cbristchoroh to Dunedin or Dunedin to Invercargill. The president of conference communicate'! further with t':e Minister on this point, suggesting a reduction of t'-e minimum combined loa<l of 1(5 boxes, and 32 .'orses. Minister replied that the Department was prepared to reduce the number to 40 horses or 20 four wheelei wagons.
