FORESTRY COMMISSION.
NARROW ESCAPE,
(Pres* A «p'vnatio7i —By T#>l<-£rapa Wellington, Saturday. A sub-conmmittee of the Royal Commission on Forestry, consisting of Messrs Haszard (chairman), Dr Cockayne, Murdoch, and Turner (secretary) arrived at Wairoa yesterday, and went on to Waikaremoana. They had a rather narrow escape from a serious accident during the journey to Waikaremoana. Whilst the car was rounding a sharp bend 1700 feet up on the side of the Tutaemaro Range, one of the side ■teps collided with a boulder on the track, bringing the car to a standstill and breaking the mainspring of he carriage. Fortunately the car was hurled to the side of the track instead of going down into the ravine.
After half an hour's delay spent in fixing up the broken spring the party reached the Lake House at 4.30. The driver was in no way to blame as the obstruction was not seen iu time. The party left the same afternoon for Napier.
