THE FERTILE NORTH.
Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister of Railways and Native Minister, returned to Wellington on Saturday, after a tour of inspection of railway lines in the North. The Minister also attended to a number of Native land matters, including negotiations for the acquisition of certain blocks of Native land. "I was struck with the possibilities of the peninsular north of Auckland," remarked the Minister to a Post representative on Saturday, "which district I believe in the futme will carry a very large population. Mr Massey is going the right way about the opening of the gum lands, which should be settled where the gum has been worked out. There seems to be great activity in the timber trade. The railway line has been practically laid into the Kaikohe railway station —an extension of the line from Kawakawa —and when it is ballasted and the buildings have been erected it will be taken over by the Railway Department. This line will open up some fine country and eventually connect with Hokianga Harbour.''
