WOMEN'S CONVENTION.
CHILD LABOUR. DRINK AND GAMBLING. AGAINST THE TOTE. (Ptvm Association. —By Telegraph. Nelson, Last Night. Tne following resolutions were passed by the W. C. T. U. Convention yesterday:— "That the Convention heartily endorses the pledge by taking the Companion of Alliance, and urges upon local unions to try and induce every voter to promise to withhold their vote from any candidate who will not undertake to remove or substantially reduce the three-fifths majority. " Mrs Sadlier addressed the Convention upon the "Bible in Schools" question, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
It was resolved—" That steps be taken to make it illegal for boys under the age of sixteen to be employed by racing clubs for the purpose of selling cards, tickets, etc., on public streets or elsewhere.'' "That the Government should be urged to take a referendum upon whether the totalisator should be retained or not.'' "That tnis Convention emphatically protests against the disabilities under which women at the present suffer in the guardianship of children, and calls upon Parliament to amend the laws in this direction, giving women equal rights with men, especially in regaid to religious instruction "
"That this Convention protests against the retention of the totalisator on the grounds (a) That it gives Government sanction to a vice which is disastrous to social life; (b) that it is inconsistent with numerous enactments against gambling in other forms;, (c) that public revenue is derived from a practice which all wise Governments have found necessary to suppress.''
