A LIGHT DECISION.
Thk decision of Cabinet to grant a sum of money towards the fund for the maintenance of the dependents of the deceased members of the Scott expedition, as announced at Christchurch jesterday by the Prime Minister will meet with wholehearted approval. This is essentially a case in which the country itself should be identified with any gift. There should be no suggestion of any charitable bequest such as attaches more or less to a passing around of the hat no matt9r how spontaneous and enthusiastic the response. Unfortunately, also, some socie les and concerns, more especially large newspaper concerns, obtain cheap advertisements by identifying themselves with fund-raisiag efforts of this description, and though in many cases no one would begrudge the kudos earned, the answer to that manly and pathetic appeal of Scott should be entirely free from any such suggestion and should be wholly in the nature of a gift from the race which so proudlyjcalls him, and his fellow heroes, kinsmen. Mr Massey bas decided well.
