An important development, possibly a prelude to the dislocation of the northern coal trade occurred today when a meeting of coalowners resolved to withdraw from the Joint Conciliation Committee, which has for some time acted as mediator between employers and employees. A letter informing the secretary of the Colliery Employees' Federation points out that when the committee was constituted it was clearly understood that it could not excuse interruptions of trade through stoppage of individual lodges, whereas during the first eight months the committee was in existence 44 stoppages had occurred. This position the proprietors refuse to tolerate longer.
