MANAKAU WINS SUMMER HANDICAP. The concluding <lay of the Marton Jockey Club's Summer meeting opened in cloudy weather, but as the day wore 011 the sun made its appearance. A strong south-easterly wind prevailed. The going was much better than on the first day—which was rather hard—owiug to the rain the previous night. The racing was interesting several fine finishes being seen. There was one misiiap during the day. Bonny fell in the Hurdles, his rider, H. Futcher, broke his wrist. Otherwise everything again went smoothly. The tote returns for the day were £17,817 as against £10,913 for the corresponding day last year, making a total for the meeting of £37,274, an increase on last year of £11,294. Makara and Vibration got first out and showed the way to the turn, where Piriwai went up and had a slight advantage. Piriwai led to within a few yards of the post where Rill and Lady Louisa passed her, Rill getting home by a head from Lady Louisa, who was half-a-length in front of Piriwai, Lord Possible fourth and Master Laddo fifth. . Sepoy soon put a gap between himself and the rest and led to the straight, where Passadena and Heather closed up. In the straight this pair drew away and after a neck and neck go Passadena got home by a nose, Sepoy a length away third, Bonfire fourth and Eminent fifth. Time 1.15 2-5. SUMMER HANDICAP. Going along the back Seatondale was in front, nearest attendants being Dearest and Manakau. Approaching the turn Mescal and Master Laddo moved up. After a good race Manakau landed the stake by three parts of a lentgli, third horse the same distance away. Dearest fourth and Byron fifth. Sea Queen's bridle slipped partly off, and she finished last. Time, 1.57.
