FEILDING NOTES.

| Continued frjin page 6, 1000 MAILS PER WEEK. In my notes repeecting tho number of mails made Jip in the. Feilding Post Office an error crept m, 700 per week appealing instead of 900. As a matter ol fact eveu with 900 1 was slighty under tlie mark, as the number ol mails liava been increasing witii outside settlement, and there are now abont 1000 mails per week made up in tbe Feilding Post Office. INSPECTION OF SCHOOLS. The annual inspection nf the District High School is fixed for November 16th and 17th —yuite a fortnight Inter than ÜBual, probably on account of the 'epidemic of measles which has prevailed everywheie. J UKIOKBiT. At the meeting of the School Oommitee last night Mr Hill, director, reported that the cricket matohps of the saasou commenced on Saturday last, throe teams baiug entered by the District High School, two from the secondary department aud one fiom the primary. The committee, he hoped, would make a grant to each department to supplement the boys' fund for the purchase of material. It was dooided that' the matter be referred to the Sports Oommittae. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Dis- ' ti-ict School Committee was held last night, Mr Mclutyre presiding. Mr J. 0. Hill, director, reported that for the month the average , attendance had been Primary department 3H2.0; secondary, 50.25; total 372.25. While for tbe past week it was primary department 355.8; ssoouitary 50.8; total 406.6. Owing to the state ol the funds it • was decided to allow tho repairing of the boys' shed to stand in abeyance for the present. At the request of the Wanganui Education Board it 'was decided to renew the annual donation for cleaning. iffa. ATTENDANCE PRIZES. The question of prizes was discussed at the meeting of the Sohool Oommittee last night. Mr Fitzpatiiok contended that attendance prizes should be abolished in future as under the new Act it was compulsory now for the ohildren to'attend. He thought that attendance prizes were unfair; Why should a child, he asked, be penalised for getting measlfs? Mr Neal thought too that too inach money was spent in attendance prizes. Eventually it was de- ; cided that the Prize Committee should draw up a ssheme for the allocation or prizes and report at the nest meeting. |TH\GAY GORDONS. A goodly number of theatre-goers propose to see The Gay Gordons to- | night. The special train should oou- | vey a big contingent to Palmersfcon. CORRESPONDENCE. FOOTPATH STORAGE. To the Editor M.D.T. Sir,—l think it is time that som6 c strong protest was mane agaiust Jj some of tha prominent business people of Feilding monopolising the footpaths in displaying their goods, much to the annoyance and inoou> venience of the general public. I was wondering what would happen if all business people were to adopt the same system, aud why some are privileged more than others'in this respect. Now that attßiition lias been drawn to this breach cf the "Borough bye-laws" it is to be hoped the nuisance will be)iemoved. Thanking yon for allowing me to ventilate this matter.-I am, etc., FAIR PLAY. Feilding, Novembar 6.
