CAMPBELL STREET SCHOOL.

SUGGESTED BATHS. At the meeting of the Campbell Street School Committee last evening, the Chairman, Rev. T. T. Thomas, brought up the question of swimming baths in the soliool grounds, so that the ohildren could be taught swimming by oxcarts. He stated that a bath was bidly needed, and referred to the recent drowning acoidenl; in the Mangßono, where PEB of. the scholars liad lost his life. He had asked the headmaster for a return nf the number of pupils who oould swim, and inquirips showed that only 39 boys and 12 girls out of 719 on the roll oould swim. If they had a dcent bath, say, 100 feet by 36, or even forger, he knew nf several mpn who would be willing to teach the pupils. He had been informed that there would be no trouble in getting the water from the Council. The bath would ba for the nsi of the • sihonl children and people living in the sohoolar?a, A committefl should be set up to make all enquiries as to cost, eto., and wait on the Onnncil re providing the water, and report at next meeting. The soliool han some private) fnuds and a canvusa wonld secnrn tin balance. The water wonld have to be let out abont three times a week in summer, and that wonld be the nnlv trouble, He estimated ti™ cost of the hatha as between £3OO and £4OO. 4 Mr Gettines thought it would be much better if all tlm schools combined to have a central bath and asked the Oounml tn snbsidise. The Chairman stated that it would not belong to anyonp th e n, and if they had (heir own bath, the High Soliool, College Street, and Terrace Enl Schools could ogo it, but it wonld be nniier the control of Cainobell Street. Tliev would most likely get the Government to snbsidise. espeoiallv wlieu the pupih were being tanght by an expert, it would be paid as a capitation fee.

Or. Clausen stated that when Mr Oohen was Mavor the matter of the water snpply for the bath was brnnsJit before him, arid he had stated that as saon as the Tiritea wntpr snpply wos completed the'fe would be no trouble whatever in petting the Borough water. The only trouble would be the outlet. They would have tn bnilrt the bitb above the grouirl. He wns sure the financial part of it would be all right. If at any time there was a shortage of water, the bath could he closed lor the time bsin?. It would be ns well for the Committee to interview Mr Jicfeell as to the nhßiires of the outlet going in the seweiace.

Ou the motion of Mr Clausen, Messrs Allman, Pickering, Fraser, and llev. T. T. Thomas were appointed a oommittae to go into the matter and wait on the uouucil, and to report progress at next meeting.
