THE" Y.R.O. MEETING.

DERBY DAY AT FLEMINGTON.

BIG CROWD AND BRILLIANT

SUNSHINE.

WILARl 1 WINS THE DERBY.

(Prws Aseociation.—By Telegraph.— Copyright).

Fl'emingtou, Saturday. After a bleak wintry week brilliant suußhine and a South bresze assured a successful Derby Day. By noon tlie crowd almost equalled the numbers of some past Cup days, and the stands 'were too crowded for the bright show of spring costumes to be seen to advantage, though the whole made a brilliant, eifeot.

The Govemocr-General, Lord Den* man and Ladv Deuman and Sir John and Lady Fuller each brought a big crowd of visitors.

The course was iu good order though not 'favourable to records. The racing programme was particularly attractive, and there was addi* tiotm! interest this year iu the decision of the three-year-old premiership and the classic race of the year, as a guide to which of the three-year-olds running in the Cup is most likely to have a say in Tuesday's big event. The weight-for-age event wps also a big factor in the general interest, and it was regarded as paiticDlarly unfortunate that Malt King was unable to again battle against Comedy King, especially in light of the former's late gallops. Malt King this morning pnt up a fast nine furlong gallop, the following being his times at the various distances :-Four furlongs, 50, live fnrlonga I.2}£, six fnrloogs 1,16, seven furlongs 1.29%, mile 1.42%, nice furlongs 1.57. The Maribyroag Plate, kcowu as the two-year-old Derby, brought the best lot of juveniles yet seen and altogether it was au exciting day's sport. The Derby proved a fine iace particularly over the last half-mile, and the finish was exoiting, and there was great enthusu asm. Results

Maiden Plate of 800 sovs, 1 njile -Elavinita 1, Vlamen 2, Was'ailer 3. The winner led all the way and won by a length, three lengths between seoond and third. Time 1.42%.
