A mail and a stock train had a headon collision on Picton Lakes, through the stock train leaving the rails. The driver and fireman of one of the trains were seriously injured, anil six passengers iyere less severely hurt. The engines were badly damaged, and a dozen trucks left the rails. . Tlie railway acoident was caused by a stock train while shunting nn a loop line to allow the MelbonrueSyduey mail to pa«s, overshooting the points, just as the mail approached. The sound of the impact ronsarf the residents, who were qmckly on the scene and rendered assistance. There wa? great excitement among the passengers till the doors were unlocked and they were released. Altogether nine were injnred, mostly from shock and brnises. One was removed to the hospital and the others proceeded to their homes after medical attention. Traflio was blocked for mauy hours. Several sheep trucks were smashed and a large nnmber of the' .animals killed aoa mangled. Three engines and other rolling stock were damaged.
