Mr t. O'B, Loughnan, who leaves to-day to take up his duties as Stipendiary Magistrate pt Hamilton, and has been widely congratulated on his appointment, was the recipient of two presentations yesterday.

CATHOLIC YOUNG MEN'S CLUB The first was from the members of the Cathoho Youug Men's Club in the Zealan'dia Hall; Dr. O'Brien presided, and on behalf of the president (Mr Kennedy)and the members presented Mr Loughnan with a case of pipes and a tobacoo pouoh. Dr.. O'Brien spoke of the high esteem in whioh Mr Loughnan was held aud his services to the Young Men's Club, He felt sure .that he would make a good magistrate. He hoped that lie would live long to Bmoke the pipes where he was going and some day oome back aud smoke them among them. Meantime he hoped that when any of them came before him he would deal leniently with' them. (Laughter.) Mr Loughnan, who had been completely taken by surprise, thanked them for their gift and the good things said of him whioh he felt he could-hardly deserve. Ho was very sorry to say good-bye aud sorry to leave the district, and hoped to see them all again before long. (Laughter.) ST. PATRICK,S PARISH. The second presentation was made at St. Patrick's Presbytery by the Rev. Father Oostello on behalf of himself and the congregation, and consisted of a handsome silver salver suitably engraved for Mrs Loughnan, The Rev. Father congratulated Mr Loughnan on his appointment for whioh his abilities, legal knowledge and experience and personal qualities eminently fitted him. Mr Longhnan was the only Roman Catholio Magistrate on the bunoli. They were under "Liberal" administration, but there was the faot. He was sure that Mr Loughnan would be a oredit to the Benoh and to the community to whioh he belonged. They had reason to be grateful to the name of Loughnan, Mr F. O'B. Loughnan for his servioes to the Young Men's Club, and Mr O. A. Loughnan for his very servioes as Chairman of the Churoh .Committee in whioh his judgment and . legal ability were always at their servioe free. He hoped to see Mr F. O'B. Loughnan yet receive the further promotion that he was sure' he would deserve and to see Mir O. A. Loughnan yet Chief Justioe of the Dominion. Mr F,' O'B. Loughnan said he had been suprised to disoover the regard in whioh he was held and the number of Virtues, of whioh he had hitherto not, been aware. He now began to think that there might besomething in them. He had always tried to do the beßt he could, and the little lie had done he had done. with goodwill. Mr 0. A.-Loughnan made a witty speeoh, in whioh he referred to his brother as the: best brother a man oould have had, He deprecated the high praise awarded to hid own servioes, whioh he would be always glad to render, 1 Other speakers Commented on the faot that since the. retirement some time ago'fi;om the benoh of Mr .Wardell until the present case, there had been no Rbman Catholic placed upon it. They Bald that while there should be no question of religion in the matter of judioial appointments and the only thingp considered should be fitness yet, it was singular that with so many suitable members of the legal profession available that there should be this virtual exclusion of members of one faith from the benoh. They were all satisfied that Mr Loughnan would prove an excellent and impartial magistrate.
